Anki Overdrive Starter Kit Review

The Anki Overdrive Starter Kit comes with everything that you will need to battle against the other cars (either with a friend or family, or against the computer) to see who can win each race and how far you will go to win. The cars are not standard cars racing on a track, they're robots, designed to battle each other!

The starter pack comes with two Robotic Supercars, two riser pieces, six curved track pieces, one four-car charging system, four straight track pieces and one tyre cleaner. You will also need a compatible iOS or Android Device and WiFi if you want to battle between devices. Thankfully, I was pleased to note that you can use a tablet to control the cars, so we have downloaded the Anki app onto the children's Kindles. This means they can play even when my husband isn't home, because they don't need his phone to play.

The starter kit comes with three different charger heads, meaning they can be used in different continents. All the kit comes in one handy box, which is also storage for the track and cars when not in use. It's not too big and is easily packed away.  To find out more about Anki Overdrive, check out their website.

The track is ridiculously simple to set up. The main parts of the track simply slot together magnetically. It is the easiest track I have ever put together. There are eight different track designs with the starter kit and they really do only take a matter of seconds to put together. The track is flexible and easy to change when you need to. The cars take between eight and ten minutes to charge and then they are ready to go.

What they say
These aren't just cars. They're robots programmed for battle. Control them with your smart device and take down opponents with an array of weapons, from plasma cannons to flame throwers. It’s pulse-pounding play, made possible through state-of-the-art tech and it's an experience unlike anything else.

Each Supercar is a self-aware robot, driven by powerful artificial intelligence (A.I.) and equipped with deadly strategy. Whatever track you build, they'll learn it. Wherever you drive, they'll hunt you down. The better you play, the better they become. Whether you battle A.I. opponents or friends, your tactical options are unlimited. And with continuous software updates, the gameplay always stays fresh. Customize weapons. Swap out cars. Build new tracks. It’s easy to pick up, and nearly impossible to put down.

The design of the cars is really smart and they look amazing. The two that come in the Starter Kit are called Skull and Ground Shock. When you first put the cars on the track, they both scan the track and learn the layout, ready to race. You need to make sure that you clean the tyres regularly to keep the cars in good order. "Each piece of the track has Infra-red encoding patterns embedded in the track, with an IR transparent ink top coat for traction and protection. The codes serve as markers of lane position (there are 16 possible lanes), and track piece type and orientation. The Supercars translate this information to determine where they are in relation to the overall track, how fast they’re moving, and which direction they’re headed."

You can order your own Anki Overdrive Starter Kit here. We haven't fully tried out all the different weapons within the cars, but we're looking forward to putting the cars through their paces over the next few weeks.

We've all really enjoyed playing with Anki Overdrive, and it's been especially nice to have something that my son is happy to play with me.  I am doing my very best to rein in my competitive side! We just need to invest in a couple of extra cars so that we can all race against each other!
