It's cold and frosty at the moment and all I want to do is wrap up warm and eat! So when I was invited to Alexander's in Skipton with my husband to sample a pop-up restaurant with a distinctly Hygge feel, I jumped at the chance for some Scandinavian cosiness!
Alexander's opened this summer and is a bar and restaurant in Skipton, North Yorkshire. It's a building which has been beautifully restored, and one that has a lot of history, not only for Skipton, but even for me! In one of it's former lives, this building was where my husband got his wedding suit from!
At the back of Alexander's, they have a secret garden, a wonderful outside space in the summer. This winter, the secret garden has been transformed. It is now an ode to Hygge and the ski slopes. It's a pop-up Off-Piste experience, offering the ultimate apres-ski pass!
The whole cabin is so luxurious. It's full of faux animal skins, comfy cushions and personalised blankets for if you get cold. It's unlikely that you'll get nippy though as there are heaters inside, which are wonderful at keeping you warm.
We were offered a mulled wine or cider as we arrived. As I was driving, I couldn't have either, but my husband opted for the mulled wine, and I chose a ginger beer. We were made to feel incredibly comfortable, and were not rushed at any point. Not long after this, our starter arrived. It was roast chestnuts and winter soup, which was butternut squash and parmesan, which was a wonderful combination. I haven't eaten chestnuts in many years, but these were really yummy.
Next up was cheese fondue with an amazing array of roast baby potatoes, cured meats, pickles & chutney. I loved how many differently coloured carrots their were! The onions were especially delicious.
Alongside the fondue selection we were also served Beer Cooked Frankfurter Sausages with pork ribs and sauerkraut. The ribs fell off the bone and the meat was so tender, it was an absolute delight to eat!
The Apres-Ski pop-up Off Piste restaurant is around until the 24th of December, so you only have a few days left to enjoy this wonderful experience. We had such a chilled out time and never felt rushed or like we were outstaying our welcome. The staff were really friendly and lovely to chat to and the whole experience was absolutely perfect.
