My son has always been interested in textures and likes to touch and feel everything. He always has something in his hands that he has picked up and is feeling, so when we were asked if we would like to try a couple of products from Learning Resources, one of which was tactile, I knew he would love it! We were sent a set of Playfoam which is aimed at children ages 3-11. I have in fact purchased this before, for my god-daughter who has learning difficulties. I liked the fact that it made no mess, and I think that is the ultimate bonus with any crafting material from a parent's point of view.
What they say
Playfoam provides mess-free creative play for children aged 3-11.
This unique creative play product will only stick to itself, not to hands, hair, clothes or carpet!
Playfoam never dries out so can be used time and time again.
Use straight from the box for immediate creative play opportunities.
Non-toxic formula ensures safe creative play activities for children as young as 3.
Encourage imaginative thinking as children squash and build anything they can think of.
Playfoam's bead-like structure promotes sensory perception and fine motor skills.
Set includes eight pods in eight vibrant colours (four original and four sparkle).
The playfoam comes in a pack of eight and the pack we received included four standard colours and four sparkle colours. I divided the colours between the two children, and the first thing that they both did was to make them into people. Once they've been added together, it's pretty much impossible to separate the colours. If you want the colours to remain separate, then don't put them together at all. Having said that, they do look pretty amazing when the foam is all combined.

The playfoam is wonderful to play with and both children are really enjoying playing with it. The foam has an interesting texture, it's soft, but can be squashed to be quite hard. When you pull it apart, you can see the stickyness that keeps it together. It never feels sticky though and we have not experienced any stickyness on our hands or any residue on the surfaces the children have played with it on.

Nearly a week after receiving it, we have so far managed to keep the playfoam relatively clean and free from dust and dirt. It is still being played with on a daily basis, and both children love the texture. I have to admit that when they're at school, I often shape it into squares or circles for them to play with when they get home. It's really quite a nice feel to it, unlike many other sensory tactile toys (I hate the feel of slime, but my son loves it)!
