One Day in December by Josie Silver Review #MNBookClub

One Day in December by Josie Silver is the latest book in the Mumsnet Book Club. This is Josie Silver's debut novel. It's a love story, but one with rather a lot of twists along the way! Laurie is not long out of university and doesn't think she believes in true love. That is until she looks out of a bus window on a snowy day in December and she sees a man who she knows is 'the one'. Laurie then spends the next year, along with her flatmate Sarah, looking for 'bus boy' in bars, at bus stops and wherever they go.  However, a year later Sarah introduces Laurie to her new boyfriend Jack, and it's him, 'bus boy'.

Laurie is torn between admitting to her best friend that her boyfriend is the one she saw at the bus stop a year ago and keeping quiet about it. There then follows ten years of heartbreak, broken friendships, missed opportunities and growing up.

One Day in December

The initial storyline I found to be a little far-fetched. Perhaps that's because I am not a romantic, but I can't imagine seeing someone through a bus window and falling in love instantly! I found the book a little difficult to get into because of that, but once I had learned more about the characters, I found the story flowed really well.

One Day in December is a heartwarming and moving love story, which is wonderful to immerse yourself into as you fall in love with the characters. You ride the rollercoaster of emotions with Laurie, Laura and Jack and end up willing there to be the right resolution at the end of the story.

Reading One Day in December

Even if you're like me and not romantic at all, it's a relatable book for the friendships and relationships. I could definitely see One Day in December being made into a film. It would be a wonderful Christmas tear-jerker! Josie Silver has written a fantastic tale of love and friendship and it was a pleasure to get lost in this cinematic book for a couple of days. I would definitely recommend this book as an easy and enjoyable read for this winter.

Disclosure: I received this book as part of the Mumsnet Book Club. All opinion is my own.
