We all know it’s important to spend time together as a family, but sometimes that’s easier said than done. My husband leaves for work before 7am during the week everyday and I am generally serving the B&B guests rather than my children. Making time for family breakfast is not something we tend to do, but it’s important, with research showing that spending even just 15 minutes together at breakfast can increase happiness for the day ahead. We were definitely willing to give it a try, and although it turned out more like brunch, it was beneficial to all of us to spend some time together.
We had to wait until the B&B guests had all checked out and the kitchen had cleared up, then we all decided what we would like for breakfast together. Oat protein pancakes were the firm favourite, so we all set to work making them for the whole family. The recipe is simple, 2 bananas, 2 eggs, 2 scoops of protein powder and 50g of rolled oats (I used gluten free ones as we didn’t have any others in the house). You pop all the ingredients into a blender and blitz. I also added a little bit of water to thin the mixture down as it was a bit too firm. Pop a little bit of coconut oil in your pan and then ladle in your pancakes and cook for one minute on each side.
When it comes to toppings, we all differ in what we like, so we make sure there’s a good selection on the table. I like a mixture of seeds, my son is a fan of strawberries, my husband likes apple and my daughter prefers sliced bananas. However, we all agree that one heaped teaspoon (15g, 80kcal) of nutella tops the pancakes off perfectly.
Even the act of preparing the breakfast together and laying the table was a great opportunity for family bonding. Working together as a team and knowing we were all going to reap the benefits shortly was very rewarding. It was also lovely to talk about what we hoped to do later in the day and what we were looking forward to during the week ahead. We’ll definitely be making more time going forward to have breakfast together as a family.
