Hip Operation Recovery Week Five

I went to see the consultant at the beginning of the week. It was the first time I'd seen him since the operation. A good friend of mine drove me to the appointment, and it was great to catch up. One thing I have got good at is asking for help! The consultant was pleased with my recovery. My wounds have healed and are both very small. I walked in without crutches, which felt great. The consultant was impressed that I haven't been in pain, he said that usually he gives patients an injection for the pain at that appointment. The best thing that happened was that he said I can drive again, which is very exciting, although slightly daunting! After the appointment, my friend and I went out for lunch before heading home. It was actually lovely to spend some time chatting to a friend, and something I definitely needed.

The next day I drove to spar. I know, I go to all the best places! It felt uncomfortable to drive, but the most painful thing was getting in and out of the car! At the weekend I drove my daughter to her karate lesson, which was a huge step in my recovery. It was very nice to feel like I have a little freedom again!

I received a message on Instagram from someone else who had just had hip surgery. They have been watching my progress and had struggled to find any other real life stories. I have wondered if I share too much on Instagram (probably), but if it helps, then I know I am doing the right thing. It's always good to know that you're not alone.

It's getting easier to get my socks on, and I can get in and out of the shower without pain. We've moved up to our bedroom in the attic. At the moment we're both under separate duvet covers so I don't have to fight for cover in the night. Again, it's a step in the right direction. The exercises from the physio are going well and I am definitely making improvements.

I have physio tomorrow and I kind of hope I can get get rid of the last crutch. I won't be disappointed if I am told I can't though as I know my mobility is going to take a while to get back to normal. I am rubbish at recovery, chomping at the bit to get to the next stage. I know it will come though, and I am making good progress. I mean, I even get to drive to my appointment tomorrow, which is huge. If you're going through something similar, you've got this.
